BBPSK proudly congratulates Prof. Dr. Dario Alessi on his appointment as President of the IUBMB. A distinguished biomolecular engineer, Dr. Alessi first engaged with the IUBMB in 2000, when he attended their congress in Birmingham—the city where he also completed his undergraduate and PhD studies. Inspired by the organization’s commitment to advancing global education and research, he was encouraged by Alexandra Newton to pursue this leadership role in 2021. Now, as President, he brings a wealth of expertise and vision.

Dr. Alessi’s research focuses on the kinase LRRK2, closely linked to Parkinson’s disease, with his team striving to unlock its molecular mechanisms to advance diagnostics and therapies. Over his three-year term, he plans to expand the IUBMB Trainee Initiative, creating even more training and fellowship opportunities, especially for young researchers in developing nations. Additionally, he aims to support the IUBMB’s renowned journals, whose success allows for continued reinvestment in global education and training initiatives.
