The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph is inviting applications for a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Population Medicine research project focused on predicting cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) risks at recreational beaches across Canada. The project will be supervised by Dr. Binyam Desta and Dr. David McCarthy within the Department of Population Medicine.

About the Research Project

Cyanobacterial blooms, commonly known as blue-green algae blooms, pose significant environmental, animal, and public health risks due to their ability to produce harmful toxins. As climate change and environmental factors continue to influence the occurrence of these blooms, there is a growing need for predictive tools that can support early warning systems and risk management strategies.

This graduate research project will focus on developing approaches to predict cyanobacterial risks at recreational beaches across Canada, contributing to improved public health protection, environmental monitoring, and water resource management.
