Genomics Opportunity

Applications are invited for the FunGen Africa Masterclass, an innovative postgraduate training programme designed to equip the next generation of African and international scientists with advanced knowledge and skills in functional genomics and its applications in health research. The programme is being offered through a collaboration between leading European and African institutions under the ENLIGHT+ Alliance and the CoRE-Genomics for Health in Africa (CoRE-GHA) initiative.

About the Masterclass

The FunGen Africa Masterclass focuses on bridging the gap between genomic discoveries and their practical application in healthcare. The course addresses critical topics in genomics, bioinformatics, structural biology, clinical genomics, and the genetics of infectious and rare diseases, with a special emphasis on African health challenges and research priorities.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how genomic data can be translated into meaningful biological insights and clinical applications, helping to address pressing health issues across the continent.

What Participants Will Learn

The masterclass covers a range of cutting-edge topics, including:

  1. Functional genomics and genomic data analysis
  2. Bioinformatics applications in health research
  3. Structural biology and molecular mechanisms of disease
  4. Clinical variant interpretation
  5. Genomics of infectious diseases
  6. Genomics of rare diseases
  7. Scientific communication and critical analysis of research literature

Unique Learning Experience

The programme adopts an interactive and collaborative learning approach through:

  1. Expert-led lectures
  2. Scientific paper discussions
  3. Student presentations
  4. Problem-based learning exercises
  5. Interactive question-and-answer sessions
  6. Networking with researchers from Africa and Europe

To ensure meaningful engagement, the course admits a small cohort of participants, allowing for personalized mentorship and close interaction with instructors and fellow trainees.

Research Internship Opportunities

Outstanding participants may be selected for short-term research internships at partner laboratories within the ENLIGHT+ network. These placements provide valuable opportunities for hands-on research training, international collaboration, and professional development. Travel and accommodation support may be available for eligible participants.

Who Should Apply?

The programme is intended for:

  1. Advanced postgraduate students
  2. Master's students in relevant disciplines
  3. PhD candidates
  4. Early-career researchers in life sciences, biomedical sciences, medicine, genomics, bioinformatics, and related fields

Applicants with an interest in genomics-driven healthcare, translational research, and African health challenges are particularly encouraged to apply.
